The Embattled Mobile Telecommunication Service Provider "Etisalat 9Ja", bears new name " 9Mobile"

In order to avoid litigation between Etisalat Nigeria and its International arm, the embattled mobile telecommunication service provider in the country has changed its brand name to 9Mobile.

The brand’s change of name came days after the global franchise, Etisalat International, ended its management agreement with its Nigerian arm and issued three weeks ultimatum to the company to get new identity.

It should be recalled that last week, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made attempts to save Etisalat Nigeria from collapse after talks with its lenders to renegotiate a $1.2 billion loan failed.

As a result, all United Arabs Emirate (UAE) shareholders of Etisalat Nigeria have exited the company and have left the board and management.

It would also be noted that the Chairman of Etisalat Nigeria, Hakeem Belo Osagie, resigned and several other members of the board have also stepped down.

However, discussions were ongoing with Etisalat Nigeria to provide technical support, adding that it can use the brand for another three-weeks before phasing it out till this latest development.

At end of the day’s management meeting of the telecom firm in Lagos on Thursday, 9Mobile was adopted by the company as the new brand name.
